1. Sleep

Sleeping enough is essential for a well-functioning brain as well as for proper development during childhood.

When you sleep, your brain works: it sorts your experiences of the day.

Sleep improves learning and memory. If you study for 3 hours and then sleep for 8, you’ll retain much more information than studying twice as much and resting less.

Studies show a link between brain plasticity (how your brain adapts) and sleep duration.

2. Exercise

Your brain needs oxygen and glucose, and exercising improves their distribution by strengthening cardiovascular and circulatory systems.

Working out also increases the production of happy hormones which reduce stress.

When you exercise, you improve the connection between your nerves and muscles. A sedentary lifestyle can damage those receptors.

Working out is essential to build and maintain a well-functioning brain on a chemical level.

3. Learning to boost your brain

Your brain is a learning machine that grows as you give it more information.

The more you give your brain new experiences, the better it will do.

Learn something new every day:

  • find a hobby
  • read
  • learn a new language
  • play an instrument
  • travel
  • play games
  • learn how to cook
  • memorise three new words
  • or anything that will feed your brain some new data to analyse.

4. Eat healthily

A healthy and balanced diet is key for a thriving brain.

Eating a diet high in sugar and low in vitamins makes you more tired, it impacts your mood and focus and can even damage neurones.

5. Be more social

The brain develops in contact with other people.

Meeting people is a challenge for your brain because it needs a lot of cognitive power to interact with others (especially in an environment that’s not familiar).

A cerebral decline in old age has been associated with a lack of social interactions.

6. Me time

Being undisturbed with your own thoughts is as crucial for your health as interacting with other people.

Introspection stimulates your brain and improves self-assessment and decision-making skills.

7. Learn how to play the piano

There is no proof listening to classical music increases your IQ.

However, playing a musical instrument in childhood does have benefits for brain development.

8. Laugh to boost your brain

Laughing brings positive body changes.

It instantly eases stress, decreases pain, boosts your immune system and improves memory.

It really is the best medicine!

9. Build good habits

Bad habits greatly contribute to dissatisfaction.

When we indulge ourselves in bad habits, it might feel good in the moment but that changes in the long term.

Instead of focusing on suppressing bad habits, concentrate on building good habits.

Reaping benefits from good habits will help maintain positive behaviours instead of seeking quick fixes to fight bad habits.

10. Question your assumptions to boost your brain

When you take on a new challenge, you rely on assumptions and experience, which is a natural and essential process.

However, when your assumptions are based on incorrect or irrational thoughts, they limit your potential.

The greatest successes and inventions are a result of people daring to question their assumptions.


Which activity will you start with to boost your brain? My favourite is definitely learning, hence why I keep moving to other countries. I always want to be discovering new things and learning to adapt.

But each activity supports the others in maintaining your brain’s health.

Work on one habit at a time and make your way to a happy and healthy brain.
