1. Use what you already have

One way to buy less is to do with what you already have.

Bonus side effect: decluttering your pantry.

This is not a huge job, it’s just about taking note of what you have so you can get a full picture.

In the process, you can throw away expired food.

You probably forgot about what’s at the back of your cupboard. Perhaps it’ll even be a good surprise.

Also, take note of what you have in your fridge and try to use what’s already there so you don’t have to buy it again.

2. Smart and easy meal planning

Find a few recipes you’ll be eating during the week.

Try to pick meals that include food you already have in your home.

Also, plan for recipes with similar ingredients if you can so you actually use up what you buy.

For example, you could be planning a salad and a wrap. Both use fresh veggies, but the dressing and format change so they feel like two different meals.

That way instead of wasting half a cucumber because you have no use for it after the one meal you planned for, you use the second half in a whole new dish.

3. Only buy what you need or will use

Making a grocery list is a simple way to make sure you don’t forget anything.

If you reduce the number of grocery trips or orders, you will spend less.

For some reason, each trip to the grocery store always ends up being more expensive than what you’d expect.

So instead of going three times a week because you need one ingredient for a recipe you’re planning on making that day, go once a week, get everything you need and save a lot of money.

On the other side of the coin, your grocery list will prevent you from buying random products that you’ll never use and will throw away.

Best way to save money is to not throw it in your garbage.

4. Beware of sales/limited products

Grocery stores know how to make sales and discounts like a great deal.

However, if you buy something half price, never use it and then throw it away, you don’t actually save money.

Keep an eye out for discounts on products you would be buying anyway, that’s the only way sales could save you money and lower your average grocery bill.

5. Make leftovers attractive

Don’t wait around for your leftovers to go bad just because you’d rather eat something else that day.

Integrate leftovers into your meal plan so they are accounted for.

It also goes for sad fruits and vegetables.

If you see an ingredient on the verge of going bad, find a way to use it.

The best way to save money and lower your average grocery bill is to stop buying food to throw it away. Wasting food is the worst thing you can do for your groceries budget.

Be smart about, revamp your leftovers if needed and use things up before you replace them.

It doesn’t take much to decrease your average grocery bill: plan and stay consistent.

You are well able to reach your goals!
